AUIS Student Selected for Prestigious Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship

Sulaimani, Iraq – July 3, 2012 – American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) graduate Ramyar Ramazan, an Information Technology major, has been selected to participate in the prestigious Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship. The scholarship will fund his Master’s degree studies at the University of North Texas, where Ramazan hopes to specialize in Networking and Computer Communications.

“It’s a dream come true,” said Ramazan. “I’ve always wanted to study in the United States!”

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program allows outstanding students worldwide to study at U.S. universities to further their academic and professional careers as well as to promote international cultural understanding.  This year, the program celebrates the 60th anniversary of the first Fulbright exchanges between the United States and Iraq.

Ramazan credits the unique internship and study abroad opportunities AUIS provides as part of the reason he was a competitive candidate for the scholarship. During his time at AUIS, Ramazan completed internships at Asia Cell and Goran Net, and participated in the Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program (IYLEP), a program designed to enable highly-motivated undergraduate students from Iraq to attend an intensive summer leadership program in the US.

After completing his Master’s degree, Ramazan plans on returning to Iraq to put his education to good use.

“I want to come back to serve my country,” he said. “I would eventually like to teach IT at the university level, so getting my Master’s is one step closer to that goal.”
